Your Questions
Answered
How does bespoke framing differ from a frame I might buy online or in a department store or other shop?
You will receive a personal consultation for each piece we frame for you. Your bespoke framing is made to measure and to your precise instructions, always to conservation or museum standard as required
Among the many aspects we can advise you on: frame material, colour and finish, whether you have glass (standard or anti-reflective or museum grade) or acrylic (perspex) glazing, or a tray or open frame without glass for a canvas, whether you’d like your frame black, white, gold, silver or coloured, or a natural wood, which could be raw, stained, waxed or hand-painted, whether you need a mount, a slip or a spacer, and if a mount what kind of mounting, or indeed what hanging system best suits the piece; and we can stretch your art on canvas for you, after which you can decide to have it framed, or hang it unframed
How long does it take you to frame something?
Our normal turnaround is about four weeks; this gives us time to schedule your framing properly into our workflow, to order and receive materials, and to frame your piece properly.
We can often frame faster if necessary, particularly for a special occasion - birthday, anniversary, retirement, baptism or indeed a funeral. For us to accomplish this means we will offer you materials we have in stock or can order for next day delivery.
What do you frame?
We frame almost anything on paper, canvas or board; it could be an oil painting, an acrylic, watercolour or charcoal, a work in pencil, crayon or pastel, a linocut, lithograph, print, poster, certificate or photograph; it could be a sports shirt, tapestry, scarf, some sports or military medals, or other memorabilia; if you would like us to frame something you don’t see mentioned here, please ask us and we’ll do our best for you
Yes, we will make mirrors to measure for you in either plain or bevelled glass and in a variety of glass finishes, and can supply them framed or unframed
Do you frame mirrors?
Do I need an appointment?
No, you are welcome to come and see us between 9am and 5pm any day from Monday to Saturday; we are usually closed on bank and public holidays; if you are bringing us new work, please try to come and see us by 4pm
Do you recycle?
Yes, we recycle as much of our waste as possible; we recycle all our waste glass - it is used in making new tableware or in industrial applications including road surfaces; we also recycle all our waste cardboard and paper, and all our recyclable plastic and metal waste; we estimate that about 80% of our waste is recycled; our waste contractor also uses HVO in their truck fleet, cutting emissions by 80-90% compared to standard diesel
Do you supply cut glass and mount board to size?
Yes, some of our customers, usually artists, ask us to supply specialist mount board and glass and acrylic cut to size for them to use in their own framing; we will usually endeavour to turn this work around for you in 24-48 hours
Yes, we print photographs for our customers; we also scan and duplicate photos and documents; we also print captions for use in framing, and get plaques made for shirts and other memorabilia; we print from A6 (105 × 148mm) to A3+ (329 × 483mm); we use a Canon Pro printer with Canon Pro ink and Canon Pro paper; by the way, did you know that the A-series paper measurement uses an aspect ratio of 1∶√2, ? This means the paper can be folded in half and maintain the same proportions
Do you print photographs?
Every bespoke frame comes at a different price. We will always do our best to match the quality you need and the budget you have; framing prices start from about £50 and can go up from there; our standard prices for sports shirt framing, one of our specialisations, are £249 and £299, depending on which of our two approaches we take; smaller shirts can cost significantly less; equally hand-painted frames and gilded frames cost more than normal as they require an enormous time of skilled work to complete them
